Franklin Burgess was born and raised in Knightsbridge, London. His journey has been one of passion and exploration, blending professional achievements with diverse personal interests.
He found his passion for computing after completing an AS Level and an A Level in computer science. These foundational courses ignited his interest in the field and led him to pursue a degree in computer science at the University of Edinburgh. Following graduation, his career began with roles in smaller companies, where he honed his skills and developed a robust understanding of the industry. His dedication and expertise eventually saw him becoming a software engineer at Microsoft in the UK, a role that signifies his professional growth and commitment to the field.
Professional Career
A software engineer is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining software systems. This role involves a blend of coding, project management and problem solving. Software engineers work on a variety of projects, from creating applications and systems to improving existing software. They collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to ensure software meets user needs and is efficient and reliable. Continual learning is essential in this field as technology evolves rapidly, requiring engineers to stay up to date with the latest advancements.
Eco-friendly Travel
Beyond his professional life, Franklin has a rich history of travel, having visited six of the seven continents. His parents instilled a love of travel in him from a young age, taking him on numerous holidays to diverse destinations including Croatia, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles and the Caribbean. As an adult he has continued to explore the world; he often spends his weekends travelling around Europe, using trains, boats and buses to minimise his carbon footprint. A recent family trip to Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea marked his latest adventure, broadening his cultural experiences and perspectives.
Hobbies & Interests – Football
Franklin’s interests are not just confined to software engineering and travel. He is a devoted supporter of Chelsea Football Club, a passion he shares with his family. He held a season ticket growing up, watching games with his grandad, grandma and dad, and football remains a significant part of his life.
Hobbies & Interests – Swimming
Additionally, he is a dedicated swimmer, having competed for his local swimming team between the ages of 12 and 17. While his focus shifted to computers in sixth form, he never abandoned his love of swimming; he continues to swim regularly, appreciating the physical and mental benefits it offers. He particularly enjoys open water and wild swimming, as they provide him with a sense of freedom and connection to nature.
